Need Stress Relief? Try Taking a Bath.
Life has a way of piling things on. Work, relationships, responsibilities, the nonstop mental chatter that follows you from room to room. We all need a release valve, and most of us are looking for one that does not require a gym membership or an hour we do not have.
I am not typically a bath person. Showers have always been my go-to. But when I started reading about the therapeutic benefits of a warm bath, I was genuinely surprised. The research is real, and the benefits go deeper than just relaxing your muscles.
What a Warm Bath Actually Does for You
Before I tried this myself, I did some reading. Here is what I found:
- Improves your mood and acts as a natural mood booster
- Reduces stress and anxiety, giving your nervous system a chance to downshift
- Releases muscle tension and soreness, making your whole body feel looser and lighter
- Helps you fall asleep more easily afterward
- Stimulates circulation and calms the nervous system
According to Healthline, a warm bath can also improve your breathing, lower blood pressure, help regulate blood sugar, and even offer protection from illness and infection. That is a lot of benefit from something that costs you nothing but a little time.
Setting the Scene: Bath Tips That Actually Make a Difference
A bath is only as good as the experience you create around it. Here are a few simple ways to elevate it:
- Aromatherapy through scented bath oils or bath products can significantly increase the calming effect
- Lighting and music set the mood more than you might expect. Candles and a soft playlist change everything
- Support your head with a rolled towel or a bath pillow so you can fully let go
- Bubble bath or shower gel can add that extra bit of indulgence
- Keep everything within reach before you get in: your body wash, body scrub, razor, shampoo, and conditioner. Nothing breaks the mood like having to climb out to grab something
My Experiment: An Intentional Stress Relief Bath
I decided to try this for myself, which meant a little prep work first.
I stopped by Hobby Lobby and picked up some candles, glass candle holders, and a lighter. Then I headed to Bath and Body Works for a few bath goodies. For music, I found a station on Pandora called “Relaxation Radio,” and it turned out to be absolutely perfect.
Here is how it went:
I lit the candles, turned on the music, and began filling the tub with warm water. Halfway through, I poured in some “Stress Relief Eucalyptus and Spearmint Essential Oils Luxury Bath” from Bath and Body Works. I set my glass of ice water, body wash, and body scrub on the edge of the tub, made sure my towel and washcloth were within easy reach, turned off the lights, and stepped in.
The Result (Honest and Unfiltered)
I have taken two of these intentional baths so far, and here is what I can tell you.
The first one was a little too hot. I struggled to get comfortable, and after about 20 minutes I started sweating. I also tend to get lightheaded if I stay in hot water too long, so I got out earlier than I planned. Not the relaxing experience I was hoping for.
The second bath was the one that changed my mind. I dialed back the temperature and gave myself permission to just be still. I closed my eyes and let myself actually feel everything: the scent of the eucalyptus and spearmint, the warmth of the water on my skin, the smooth feeling of the scrub working, the sound of the music filling the room. I stopped thinking about my to-do list. I stopped planning. I just existed in that moment for a little while.
When I got out, I felt calm. Genuinely calm. Not the kind of calm that fades the second you check your phone, but a quieter, more settled feeling that stayed with me.
Will I Keep Doing This?
Yes. Not every day, that is not realistic for my life. But once a week? Absolutely. It is a small, affordable, accessible act of self-care that actually works.
If you have been feeling the weight of stress lately, I want to gently encourage you to try this. You do not need expensive products or a fancy bathtub. You just need a little time, a candle or two, and the willingness to show up for yourself.
Try a stress relief bath and see what it does for you.
Wishing you a peaceful and stress-free day,
